12 TIPS TO SUCCEED IN THE WRITING PART OF IELTS!

In this post, we will talk about the third part of the IELTS Exam, which is writing. You have one hour to write two compositions. There will be no extra to make a clean copy of the text. Therefore, you should not write a first draft and then a final version. Instead, write your final version right away.

The tasks in IELTS Academic and General are slightly different. Find the kinds of tasks below:

IELTS Academic

The Writing part of IELTS Academic includes two tasks.

Topics are suitable for candidates entering undergraduate and postgraduate studies or willing to work in another country.
Task 1
You will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarize or explain the information in your own words. You may be asked to describe and explain data, describe the stages of a process, how something works. You may also be asked to describe an object or event.

Task 2
You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.  Responses to both tasks must be in a formal style.

ELTS General Training

The Writing part of IELTS General Training includes two tasks which are based on topics of general interest.

Task 1

You will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information, or explaining the situation. The letter may be personal, semi-formal or formal in style.

Task 2
You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The essay can be slightly more personal in style than the Academic Writing Task 2 essay.

Now check out our 12 tips:

Task 1

  1. Draft a short four-part plan
  2. Use 20 minutes on Task 1
  3. You will lose marks if you do not keep to the question.
  4. Report what the data in teh table/chart shows. DO NOT speculate about knowledge you might have about the data.
  5. Look at the visual information carefully. Consider:
  • What information is the most important
  • What general trends it shows
  • How the data is organized
  • Rephrase the words from the question
  • Make time to proofread

Task 2

  1. Use 40 minutes to answer part 2.
  2. Underline the key part of a sentence.
  3. Avoid beginning with I. Try to use impersonal language. e.g. It seems to me.
  4. Make a short plan.
  5. Make sure that you use a logical structure:

Situation – problem – solution – conclusion

Introduction – development – conclusion

  1. Make sure that you give examples and offer evidence to support what you are saying.
  2. In task 2, you will be marked on: Task response, Coherence and cohesion, Lexical resource, Grammatical range and accuracy. It counts twice as many marks as Task 1.

Be sure to use websites such www.statistics.gov.uk to find useful language, and try to keep useful language and expressions in mind. They will count a lot to your mark! To make the most of your practice, have a teacher or friend read your texts in order to find out some things which could be improved.

Have a nice time studying and stay tuned!
